The degree to which readers use Global Press Journal news stories to advance education, movement building, policy making and more.

Global Press conducts annual assessments to understand how readers use our news stories after publication. With robust insights provided by local partners, our reporters and readers, we’re working to track the impact of our journalism across the world. In 2019:

% of stories that received letters to the editor, comments or direct feedback from readers: 61%

% of stories were cited in local media, government reports, INGO/NGO or other professional publications: 28%

% of stories were used locally by policymakers or activists to support social or legal action: 12%

When possible, we measure or record tangible social impact that can verifiably be credited to a Global Press Journal story.

When a Global Press reporter in Uganda wrote about a discriminatory hair policy that forced Black girls to keep their hair short while others girls could grow their hair long, more than 500,000 Ugandans engaged with the article on Facebook. Within months, the policy had been reversed at several schools.

When a Global Press reporter in Indian-administered Kashmir challenged the Indian government's environmental impact assessment of a proposed dam, she proved they had underestimated the number of people in the flood path by more than 30,000. The dam project moved from fast-tracked status to “under review."

Fourteen years after the end of the country's civil war, a Global Press reporter in Nepal investigated the more than 62,000 pending claims in front of the country's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Weeks after her story was published the commission finally begin processing cases and presenting them to the government.

Why it matters:  At Global Press, we measure impact at scale by the size of our engaged audience (not the size of our reporter population.) Measuring the size of our audience and how they engage with our stories is essential to understanding our value in the world.
